Imagine being so bereft of ideas that your only go-to is to take an IP that's over 20 years old and race swap the main character. And before someone gets all bent out of shape I don't care that Ariel is black, I care that Hollywood is so lazy.

Who doesn’t understand that the movie studios aren’t interested in new ideas because they aren’t as profitable? The point is, since Hans Christian Anderson first wrote The Little Mermaid, they have always been white. Scientifically speaking they would be white. It takes place outside of freakin' Denmark.

At least if it's a genuinely interesting twist to the character and not this 'diversity for the sake of diversity', these people still are different in ways and this can be a huge advantage but most big corps have their head too high in the attention-cloud they get for doing so when making that apparent. It wouldn't make sense to put them in the same exact story even though there is a quite visible difference, but if they are smart, they can use this to their advantage and turn it around to some degree, but then again, it's easy to fall into a lot of political cubicles if you decide to do so, which does more harm than good. Although, if pushing agenda is their goal, that might be what they desire. But these companies should focus on entertaining folks and not on what is or what isn't politically correct

Pretty much what Das Troll said. It's annoying for black people and white people alike. Disney doesn't care enough about black people to just write some original characters, and doesn't care enough about white people to leave white characters white.

Write an original character. It's cool if they're a mermaid, it's cool if they're a princess, it's fine if the story is similar, but it's insulting to everyone involved in the franchise, whether it's a fan that saw it as a kid in theaters, the writers and animators involved in the original, or black families. Bottom line is Disney couldn't be fucked to actually make a black character. Instead they took the easy way out and made an already beloved Disney princess black in hopes that it will please the sheeple.

Original characters don’t bring in the same ticket sales as stuff with an existing fan base. It’s more cost effective to just revive old IP with a new and fresh twist.

slavery no longer exists for the simple reason that it is more economically sound to 'own' employees than it is to be responsible for slaves. the laws and regulations on slaves were more stringent than current OSHA requirements. for example...if an enslaved nigger was sick, the owner was legally bound to make sure it was taken care of. nowadays if an owned 'employee' is sick and 'employer' has zero responsibility.
