View Full Version : Should I become a Buddhist?

I've been raised in a fairly Catholic household, but I'm doubting a lot of it. I believe in God, but the whole thing about the saints and the Eucharist and all seems stupid to me. Does anybody like the sound of Buddhism, or maybe another Christian religion?

Read "The Wisdom of Insecurity" by Alan Watts.

Short & Sweet.

"Belief clings, but faith lets go." http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif)

edit: The book is a nice introduction to philosphical Taoism and Buddhism. A nice alternative to western philosophy. It's a nice way to think, but it's not really a 'religion'. If you want to stick with Christianity, try non-denominational. Get a standard Bible (not a Catholic version; it's different), and read through the gospel and such. Try to avoid any 'spin' your church has put on the story and interpret it by yourself, as you read it, and as it affects you. Protestant beliefs (as far as I've seen) are much more lenient than Catholic.

Yes you should because Catholicism is evil.

I'm a pagan myselƒ but if you want a place to look for some good ideas that will actually help you in life read "The Art of Happiness."

It's a good book with some good ideas.

A buddhist is good....its logical and its reasonable, and lastly, it does not involve some weird shit you HAVE to do just to go to some psuedo heaven where you will 'meet your maker' and maybe get laid by 72 virgins or something

It would be a very wise choice as Buddhists do not have to believe in any gods, which are completely illogical and Buddhism is a very flexible religion which allows you to incorporate your own views on life into it.

Meditation is also quite an interesting aspect of the religion and can be very relaxing.

I've been reading about reincarnation, and the Buddhists say we come back as animals and they refer to them as lesser beings. Well, animals aren't lesser beings, they're just like us. So I say fuck the Buddhists.

Not all Buddhists say this. Educate yourself, please.

To the topic starter, I recommend reading Buddhism Without Beliefs by Stephen Batchelor.

You can practice mindfulness and some forms of buddhism and still be Catholic.

A Buddhist would already know the answer to the question, not console in others.

He never said he was a Buddhist.

Hinduism is much more interesting than Buddhism, in my opinion. Lots more stuff to do, as well.

I like the idea of the stages of life, but I am not too crazy about the caste system.

You shouldn't ask other people what religion to be a part of, I'm seriously not sure why nobody has said this. Find a set of beliefs that make sense to you and that you can live by, and go from there.

You can always invent your own religion.

I've done it, although it's not so much of a religion as a set of guide lines for one to live their life buy. I call it Awesomtology(nothing to do with scientology).

Nothing is set in concrete in Awesomtology, just try to be a good person based on what you think a good person would do and try to think for yourself.
