View Full Version : If we didnt have religon, what would happen?
Religon dictates a certain set of belief system. basicly the 10 commandments. now, I believe that they are in people naturaly, but Ive heard other wise.
soo what happens when you take out all religon?
or is it even possible? I mean you'll always find a group of people that has the same ideals as other people and then they will congrugate. etc.

I agree with Voltaire when he said, "If God didn't exist, it would be necessary to invent him." I genuinely believe there's a thirst for the ultimate truth in every human being, and a desire to find God is a part of that.

If you took out religion you'd only have politics. Except they wouldn't have that bible argument against gay marriage....if they even would have marriage.
It would be peaceful, half the world would not have been explored... Freedom would run rampant http://www.totse.com/bbs/eek.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/eek.gif) can't have that... IT'D BE A FREAKISH WORLD WITHOUT RELIGION! COME BACK RELIGION, COME BAAAAAAAAACK!!!

I don't think stopping religion in humans is even possible.
Everywhere you go, there's a group that has some sort of belief in a higher power, from the US to Indonesia.

Well, humans in the past have developed religion to explain what they don't understand, hence the emergence of different belief systems in different parts of the world. And as our understanding of our world has changed, so have our beliefs. It could be possible that we would not pursue/develope religion if it wasn't for our previous exposure to it. It would be interesting to see children raised in an environment devoid of any mention of god or a higher power, but with all of our current scientific information available to them. Though the morality of the project would be questionable, it would be interesting to see if they would devise their own god or just accept the world as seen with no supernatural beings.

I read an article in Time about a gene that makes humans look for a "god".
But even if we didnt have that gene, the ancient world lacked science and ultimatly, the facts behind certain things. People feared the unknown, namely death, and hence, "god". I believe in the next 100 years, religion will become less and less important. In 500 years, religion will be a joke.

You do realize that there are hundreds of religions, most of which do not ascribe to the 10 commandments, don't you?
yes, that wasnt my point.
Its a genreality. BASICLY they all reinforce what the 10 commandments state.

That's what happened in the scientific revolution and later the enlightenment about 500 years ago. I also think religion will lose it's grip on society in a few hundred years, but nothing's certain.

A neighbor of mine lived in China until 7th grade. Although he wasn't raised completely isolated from religion, there apparently isn't very much emphasis put on religion over there. He thinks the entire concept of religion and the supernatural is ridiculous. We, of course, would need a far larger sample size to make any conclusive claims.

It's not that there's no emphasis put on it, but that teaching religion in any form anywhere is illegal in China.

It is true, most Chinese are not very religious, but then again so are Europeans, just look at the statistics. I think more Muslims now go to church on a regular basis than do Christians in the UK. All over Europe church attendance is way down in just the past century alone, it is atleast one area where God is dead. Even here in the USA nontheism(atheism/agnosticism) has almost doubled in just one decade from 6%-11% and as everyone knows Catholicism is way down all across the US. The only thing keeping the religious fanatacism in the US going strong is a fervent generational indoctrination tradition, especially along the 'Bible Belt'. Though religion may never fully be exterminated from Earth, it seems to atleast be shifting away from Western Exoteric religions to Eastern Esoteric/philosophical religions and I say good. If one more person or country kills or defends land in the name of god or divine destiny......I swear to God....or a purple monkey living on the other side of the moon...same difference.

Most people would just do whatever they want. Corrupt governments would rise up and enslave billions. War, disease, famine, and genocide would rage across the planet. Powerful tribes would stockpile terrifying weapons and struggle for ever dwindling resources as humanity marches closer and closer to extintion.
Oh you said WITHOUT religion?
