What would be a good reason for a deity or a group of deities to step down from their posts, and let different deities take over?

It's a (mostly) random question.

Thanks.

A few possible reasons include familial connections, the winning of a challenge, conclusion of worship, the death of worshipers, the death of a loved one, or simple boredom.

This sounds like the structure of the gods in Greecian (?) 'religion.'

Gods changed status because the Greeks saw them as having the same desires/feelings as humans, and omnipotence was not present.

Since the gods were essentially souped-up humans, I think Euda's points stand true.

Fuck!

But that would encompass Rome, as well, and I don't know anything about Roman religion, although I've heard it's similar.

Well, it doesn't really matter, because Greece is Eastern Orthodox, I believe.

You mean Hellenic. Hellenistic was the culture of people in the Macedonian Empire during the later reign of Alexander.
